Paul J. Schmoyer, age 90, of Youngstown and Ft. Myers, FL, died on Monday, July 7, 2014 in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, after a lengthy illness. Paul was born on May 2, 1924 in Weehawken, NJ, the son of the late Rev. Dr. Arthur and Maude (Smith) Schmoyer.
A Veteran of WW II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Radar Mechanic from August of 1943 to his honorable discharge in March of 1946. Paul was the recipient of the American Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and the WW II Victory Medal. Following his discharge he married Betty J. (Swift) Schmoyer on August 16, 1946.
A Contractor, Paul was the founder and owner of Schmoyer Co. Inc. in Youngstown. He built Willow Beach RV Campground in Youngstown and the Townhouses of Youngstown, Inc. Paul was instrumental in the design and building of the Cannon Design Building on Grand Island, as well as Lutheran Church of The Messiah in Lewiston and two other Churches in Niagara Falls. He served on the Board of Directors for "The Landings" in Ft. Myers, FL; was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church; a charter member of the Lewiston Kiwanis Club; and a former member of the Niagara Frontier Country Club. He enjoyed golfing and boating.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; his children, Jeffrey (Diane) Schmoyer of Pittsburgh, PA, Kyle (Harold) Sachs of Derry, NH, and Stephen (Denise) Schmoyer of Youngstown; his grandchildren, Adam, Matthew, Christine, Colin, Christopher, Benjamin, and Sarah; as well as three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Darrah; and two brothers, Arthur and Charles Schmoyer.
A Memorial Service, followed by Military Honors, will be held on Friday, July 25, 2014 at 4:00 PM in the Lutheran Church of The Messiah, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston with the Rev. Thomas Mason officiating. There will be no prior visitation. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of The Messiah, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston, NY 14092. Arrangements have been entrusted to HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Sts., Lewiston.
