LEWISTON - (Lewiston) - Thomas A. Napier, age 89, of Lewiston, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at his residence, under the loving care of his family and Niagara Hospice, after a lengthy illness.
Tom was born February 17, 1921, in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of the late Andrew and Anne (Mullrine) Napier. He attended local schools and was a 1939 graduate of Niagara Falls High School. Tom enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theatre. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant. After his discharge he began working as an Assistant Cashier at E.I. DuPont in Niagara Falls, a position he held until 1961. He married Dorothy E. (VandenBosch) on May 10, 1947, and they moved to Lewiston in 1952.
Tom served as Postmaster of the U.S. Post Office in Lewiston, retiring after 25 years. He had also served as a Trustee on the Lewiston Village Board in the 1950’s. After his retirement he and Dorothy wintered in Punta Gorda, FL for 20 years.
Tom was a communicant of St. Peter’s RC Church in Lewiston. He served there as head usher, a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, the Holy Name Society, and worked for the Catholic Charities Appeal. As a young man, Tom played semi-pro baseball and was selected into the Niagara Falls Sportsman Hall of Fame in 2005. He was a member and former Governor of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #584 in Lewiston; a member of the American Legion Post #1083 in Lewiston; the V.F.W. Down River Post #7487 in Lewiston; the Lewiston Queenston Rotary; the Lions Club of Youngstown; and a member of the Umpires Association. An avid golfer, he was also a member of the Queenston Golf Club in Queenston, Ontario.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy; his children, Thomas P. (Elizabeth) Napier and Joan (Kim) Quarantillo, both of Lewiston, Judith (Bryan Aaker) Napier of Minneapolis, MN, and Timothy (Charlotte) Napier of Lewiston; his grandchildren, Patricia (Dennis) Sweatman, Katherine, Julie and Kelly Quarantillo, Andrew, Jessica and Lukas Napier; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Carly Sweatman; several brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Jim Napier; and a sister, Mary Watts.
Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Streets, Lewiston on Thursday from 7-9 PM and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 26 at 10:00 AM in St. Peter's RC Church, 600 Center St., Lewiston, with the Rev. Sebastian C. Pierro officiating. (Please assemble at church.) Burial with Military Honors will follow in Dickersonville Cemetery, Ridge Rd., Lewiston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14094, or to the Lewiston Volunteer Fire Co. #1 Ambulance Fund, 145 N. 6th St., P.O.
