NIAGARA FALLS — Florence May Reid, age 103, died Wednesday, August 14, 2013, after a brief illness. She was born in Tonawanda, NY on July 7, 1910, the daughter of the late John L. and Martha A. (Solomon) May.
She was predeceased by her husband, James A. Reid; brothers, Howard May and Raymond May and sisters, Edna (May) Elworthy and Mildred May. She is survived by five nieces and nephews, John A. May, Marilyn (May) Updegraff, Donna (May) Burolla, Kenneth J. May, Carolyn (Elworthy) Waterman; 16 great and 26 great-great- nieces and nephews.
Florence became a legal secretary and worked in Tonawanda after graduation from Tonawanda High School. The May family moved to a farm on Lockport Rd. in Sanborn, NY in 1926. She married James Reid on Sept. 4,1943, and was married for 51 years and resided in Sanborn. Florence was very community and family oriented. She was an active member of Sanborn Methodist and Hope United Methodist in Pekin, NY. She served as a Treasurer for the church for many years and helped coordinate many "rummage sales", bake sales and funeral receptions. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed seeing the family grow and hearing stories of what was going on in their lives. Although never experiencing the gift of having her own children, she managed to acquire mother-nurturing skills that will be missed. Even at age 103, she had grace, dignity, integrity and never complained.
The family thanks the staff at Alterra Sterling Home, 6741 Nash Rd., Tonawanda, for all the loving care given Florence.
The family will be present at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 5893 Hoover Rd., SANBORN, NY, on Monday from 11:00-2:00PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00PM, with the Rev. Matthew Kofahl officiating. Interment following at Mt. View Cemetery, Pekin, NY.
