Man Killed
By Freight
Train Here
Another name was added to the
long list of railroad grade crossing
victims here early yesterday morning
when Edward S. Virco, 58 years
old, 5651 Lindbergh avenue, was
struck and almost instantly killed
by a New York Central freight train
near the Fifty-sixth street crossing.
Virco was found lying dead beside
the tracks at 3 a-m. yesterday by
Joseph A. Bailey, 5688 Devlin avenue,
and Coroner James W, Heary
and police who were summoned expressed
the belief that he had been
hit by a westbound New York Central
freight train that passed the
crossing 45 minutes earlier.
The body was found about 18
feet from the tracks where he
had apparently been thrown by
the force of the impact. Virco
died almost instantly of a skull
fracture. Coroner Heary reported,
in issuing a certificate of accidental
death.
The accident was investigated by
Lieutenants John M. Litchard and
Thomas Hehlr and Patrolmen Theodore
Puff, Harry Goater and Harrington
N. Thomas, who found during
their Investigation that members
of the train crew did not know
of the accident.
The train crew included W. H.
Thering, engineer; John Duarells,
fireman; Henry Cross, conductor;
Albert- Briggham, J. c. Walters and
Frank Staley, brakemen, none of
whom saw or felt the train hit
Virco.
Canadian War Veteran
Virco served with the 98th Canadian
Army Battalion ln World War
1 and he was a past commander of
the Niagara Palls Unit, No. 1, of the
Canadian Corps association.
His only survivor is a son, Fireman
First Class Edward Virco,
U.S.S. Douglas H. Fox, (DJD. 779).
Mrs. Virco, the former Miss Kate
W. Hardy, died last April 9.
Virco was born September 6, 1889,
in England, but came here from
Canada 36 years ago. He was employed
as a cell operator at the
Mathleson Alkali Works, Inc.
Funeral services will be at 2
o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the
Beatty Funeral home, 1136 Main
street. The Rev. George H. Easter,
pastor of St. Stephen's Episcopal
church, will officiate. Interment
will be ln Rlverdale' cemetery.
