Funeral services will be held Wednesday for former Mayor Eugene C. Butler, 69, who died Saturday night (Feb. 18, 1956)in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Butler, who lived at 530 Main St., where he operated a florist shop, was a native of. Niagara Fallls, He was active in. the_business civic and political life of the city for most of his lifetime.Mr. Butler was appointed as mayor when Ernest W. Mirrington Jr. went into the Army in 1942. In 1943 he won the Democratic nomination for mayor and was defeated in the general election by the late Stephen A Lamb, Republican nominee.
Lost to Lupton
When Mr. Lamb, a councilman at the time of his election as mayor, took over his new office, Mr. Butler was appointed to the vacant Council seat. Mr. Butler did not seek election to the Council but in 1948 he defeated Mayor Lamb in the Republican primary and himself was defeated in the general election by the Democratic nominee, the late William R. Lupton.
Member of a pioneer Niagara Falls family, Mr. Butler was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School and Cornell University. After receiving his degree from Cornell, he became manager of the florist business founded by his father.
He served several years as chairman and director of local Red Cross activities and was a leader in Community Chest fund-raising drives here.
Mr. Butler was a past exalted ruler of Lodge o. 346, BPOE. At the time he was named to head the lodge, he was one of the youngest rulers to be installed by the local organization. He also was a member of Lodge No. 88, FOE, and Moose Lodge No. 838.
Served on USO Unit
He served as secretary of the local Rotary Club and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Niagara Assn. He also was a director of the Florists Telegraph Delivery Assn., a national organization.
During World War II, Mr. Butler served four years as property officer of the local civil defense organization. He also was a member of the USO committee here.
Mr. Butler was a member of the LaSalle Yacht Club and a member of the Niagara Falls Board of Social Welfare.
Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Helen L. Butler.
The Rev. James E. Wells, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Lewiston, will conduct funeral services at Cobler's Funeral Home Wednesday at 2 pm. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
