- Obituary of Chester Gawel
Chester ''Chet'' Gawel, 98, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on September 24, 1922 he was the son of the late Michael and Aniela (Palka) Gawel. Chet graduated from Trott Vocational High School and attended Kelly's Business school from 1946-1948.He began working at Union Carbide in the C2C Chemical department in March of 1942. Leaving in December of 1942 to enter the United States Navy on January 26, 1943. Chet served during World War II on the USS Christopher, USS Clarence L Evans and finally the USS PC 611. For his service to his country, he received the Point System, Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Asiatic Pacific Philippine Liberation medals. Chet was honorably discharged as a fireman 1st class on February 8, 1946.After serving his country, Chet went back to work at Moore Business forms as a receiving clerk. He worked there from 1947-1956. In September of 1956, Chet began his career as a letter carrier with the United Sates Postal Service. He was a letter carrier for 33 years until his retirement on January 1, 1989.Chet was also a very prominent athlete, playing softball, baseball, basketball and tennis. Actively involved in the local little league as a coach & manager from 1965-1975. He was also a member of the former St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish, now Divine Mercy Parish and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #1451.He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary (Nawrocki) Gawel; children, Kathleen A. Henderson, David (Theresa) Gawel, Michael S. (Michelle) Gawel, Gary P. Gawel and Robert C. (Tamara) Gawel; eight grandchildren; 4 great-granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, John, Walter, Frank, Julian and Bill and sister, Nellie Chmaj.Friends may call Monday, December 21st from 1-3 PM & 6-8 PM at ZAJAC FUNERAL HOME INC., 319 24th Street, cor of Welch Ave, Niagara Falls, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 9:30 AM on Tuesday, December 22nd at Divine Mercy Parish, 2437 Niagara Street, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Jacek Mazur officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Burial with Military Honors following in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. In Lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Divine Mercy Parish, 2437 Niagara Street, Niagara Falls, NY 14303 or a Charity of One's Choice.
