Richard A. "Dick" Hewitt

LAWRENCE, KS - Richard A. Hewitt of Lawrence, KS, passed away July 20, 2014.
Dick was born December 15, 1920 to Alan and Lena Hewitt of Lewiston, NY.
After growing up on the Hewitt Dairy Farm, he attended Niagara University and then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in February 1942. He served as a member of the 78th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force in the European Theatre during World War II, from 1943 to 1945. Richard also served in the Air Force Reserve and retired from that service as a Lt. Col. In 1962.
He received his BA in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan and was employed for many years at the Dupont Company in both New York State and Kansas, before retiring in 1982.
He married Lyn Rudd on August 29, 1947 in Cedarville, MI. She survives at home in Lawrence, KS. Other survivors include daughter, Donna Lyn Flory (Jim) of Lawrence, KS; son, Richard Wayne Hewitt (Linda Rauch) of Taos, NM; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one brother, Alfred L. Hewitt of Niagara Falls, NY. He was preceded in death by brothers, Donald Hewitt, Gerald Hewitt, Harold Hewitt and Kennith Hewitt.
A memorial service will be held on August 4, 2014, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. The family suggests memorials in his name to "Wounded Warrior Project" or a charity of donor's choice, and may be sent to the mortuary at www.warren-mcelwain.com.
