LEWISTON — DeVere “Jerry” Belden, 89, of Lewiston, NY, died on Sunday, December 19, 2010 in Mount St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston, NY. Born on July 19, 1921 in Allegan, MI, he was the son of the late Alvin and Olive (Sharless) Belden.
Mr. Belden attended schools in Michigan. Jerry, as he was known by family and friends, served in the United States Army, during World War II. While serving, he was awarded the Bronze Star. Mr. Belden came to Niagara Falls, NY in 1948. On May 7, 1949, Jerry married the former Evelyn M. Stewart. He worked as a mechanic for both Goodrich and Goodyear. Later, Mr. Belden was employed as a Millwright for Carborundum and Olin. Jerry retired in 1982. In 1989, he and his wife moved to Lewiston, NY. Mr. Belden was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Niagara Falls, NY, where he was a member of the St. James Seniors. For 40 years, Jerry volunteered his time in the nursery at St. James United Methodist Church, where he was known as “Uncle Jerry.”
In addition to his beloved wife of 61 years, Mr. Belden is survived by one daughter, Brenda (George) Pope of Lewiston, NY; two grandchildren, Lauren (Jeromye) Rogers of Virginia and Kevin Pope of Lewiston, NY, and two great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Hunter. Jerry is also survived by two sisters, Mary Lou (late Raymond) Brennan of Michigan and Phyllis (James) Thomas of Michigan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Donald (Emma of Michigan) Belden.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 4-7 PM at the OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY (297-9007), where a funeral service will be held at 7:00 PM.
