- Niagara Gazette 6/21/1929
A close watch Is being kept on the
uper river and Hydraulic canal today
for trace, of the body of Charles Jerome
Winker, 13 years old, son of Mr. and
Mrs. George Winker, 548 Seventeenth
street, who was drowned Thursday afternoon
when he slipped from a log and
fell into the Niagara river behind the
Edward Dean Adams plant of the Niagara
Falls Power company in Buffalo
avenue. No trace of the body' was
found up to press time today, although
coastguardsmen from Buffalo were assisting,
in the search.
Yesterday's account of the drowning
erroneously gave the name of the victim
as Thomas J. Winker. Members of
the boy's family said today that about
two hours elapsed between the time the
lad fell into the water and t he time
when the other children who were playing
with him told of the tragedy. The
other children ran to the unfortunate
boy's home, they said, but were too
frightened to tell his family of the accident
for several hours.
