Walter H. Sprenger, 86, of North
Tonawanda, father of NEWS Columnist
Kenneth Sprenger, died
Wednesday in DeGraff Memorial
Hospital.
What the elder Mr. Sprenger
wrote about his philosophical view
of dying is slated to appear in one of
his son's future columns, the sports
columnist told the NEWS.
"He taught me the love of fishing
and hunting and was one of the best
rabbit trackers," he said of his
father.
A machinist by trade, the elder
Mr. Sprenger worked at Buffalo
Pumps and the Wurlitzer Co. plant
in the 1940s. He was a retired
custodian at St. Matthew Lutheran
Church, where he was a member
and Sunday school teacher.
Mr. Sprenger and his late wife,
Mabel Rieck Sprenger, were married
60 years, before her death four
years ago, their son said.
Besides his son, Kenneth of North
Tonawanda, Mr. Sprenger is survived
by sons Allen of Long Island,
and Carlton of Lockport; a brother
Gerhardt Sprenger of North Tonawanda;
11 grandchildren and 17
great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11
a.m. Saturday at the Wattengel
Funeral Home Inc., 307 Oliover St.,
with the Rev. A.W. Moldenhauer
officiating. Burial will be in the St.
Matthew Cemetery
