Mrs. H. Schmidt dies after illness
Mrs. Hedwig Schmidt, 85, a music teacher in the Tonawandas area, died Monday
in DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a long illness. A graduate of the Wisconsin
Conservatory of Music, she was a soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra before moving to North Tonawanda. During her early years in the area, she sang in the Wambsganss Trio with two of her sisters and was long active in the Wednesday Morning Music Club, Chromatic Club and the former Buffalo Symphony Orchestra. She also was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and its Ladies' Guild and Women's Missionary Society. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Martha Witkop of Bergholz and Mrs. Theresa Kuntz of Ramsey, Pa.; eight grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; two brothers, Samuel and Martin Wambsganss of the Tonawandas, and four sisters, Miss Theresa Wambsganss, Miss Frieda Wambsganss and Mrs. Esther Gonyaw, all of North Tonawanda, and Mrs. Ruth Harrington of Lancaster. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Matthew Lutheran Church. Burial will be in White Chapel Cemetery.
