Leaving this life to join God, Macaria Geschwender passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, Aug. 27, at the age of 74, surrounded by her loved ones.
Macaria was born on Jan. 2, 1926, to Jose Domingo and Juanita (Rea) Perez in Chanute, Kan. On Sept. 18, 1950, she married Jerry Southerland Geschwender in Fort Myer, Va. She was a longtime resident of the Mishawaka-South Bend area, and resided at 402 W. South Street in Bremen, Ind.
Leaving behind to cherish her memory and mourn her passing are her husband, Jerry Geschwender of Bremen; five sons, Domingo Geschwender of Chilcoot, Calif., John Geschwender of South Bend, Ind., Jerome Geschwender of Osceola, Ind., Jose Geschwender of Bourbon, Ind., and Phillip Geschwender of Mishawaka, Ind.; three daughters, Julie Ann Geschwender of Mishawaka, Christine Weist and her husband, Greg of Mishawaka, and Margaret Maliniemi of Bourbon. she is also survived by seven brothers, John Perez and his wife, Paula of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Crespin Perez and his wife, Mary of Omaha, Neb., and Jose Perez of Omaha, Pete Perez and his wife, Nancy of Denver, Colo., Julian Perez and his wife, Vickie of El Paso, Texas, and Jerry Perez and his wife, Della of Denver, and Richard Perez and his wife, Kathy of Sacramento, Calif.; and three sisters, Elenor Guzman of South Bend, Margaret Rosas of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Juanita Rosas of Scottsbluff, Neb.; eight grandchildren, Jason Michael Young, Jerry Southerland Geschwender, Joshua Geschwender, Bryanna Lynn Weist, David Michael Weist, Alaina Macaria Budzinski, Eric Edward Weist and Genoah Ashler Maliniemi; and by a great-grandchild, Joshua Casey Geschwend-er, and his mother, Carmela Allen.
Mrs. Geschwender was an Army veteran, honorably discharged in 1951. While serving in the Army, she was a teletype operator in the Pentagon. Mrs. Geschwender worked in the nursing profession for many years in the Michiana area. Memberships include the Michiana Tidal Waves of South Bend, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic church in Nappanee, Ind.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, in the Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola, where a Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic church in Nappanee, with Reverend Peter Scott presiding over services.
Memorial donations in Macaria's name may be made to the church.
