MACHIAS, NY — Meryle K. Reitz, of Bakerstand Rd., died Wednesday (April 3, 2013), at his home following a long illness. Born March 15, 1925 in Sykesville, PA, he was the son of August and Tessie Boaz Reitz. On May 16, 1953, in North Tonawanda, he married Audrey Scherrer who died Feb. 25, 2008.
Mr. Reitz served in both WWII and Korea, and served in the Navy and Marines. He was employed at Spalding Fibre of North Tonawanda, retiring in 1993. He also worked construction for Cliff Green and Herald Nice. Later years he was employed at the Seneca-Allegany Casino in Salamanca.
Mr. Reitz was a member of the VFW Post 526 in Springville. He enjoyed wood working, gardening, hunting, fishing with his grandchildren and gambling at the casino.
Surviving are three daughters, Robin (Paul) Wendt of Sanborn, Kandace L. Mabee of Hinsdale, Leatta Reitz of Springville; seven grandchildren; a brother, William Reitz of North Carolina; and a sister, Jeanne Hunt of Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Bruce M. Reitz in 1974; a sister, Madeline Pletcher and a brother, George Reitz.
Friends may gather with the family on Saturday (April 6, 2013) from 11 AM-1 PM at the Babbitt & Easton Funeral Home, 7 N. Main St., Franklinville. Graveside services with military honors will follow the visitation at Mt. Prospect Cemetery in Franklinville. Memorials may be made to Home Care & Hospice, 1225 W. State St., Olean, NY 14760.
