Silvan Batt, 24 years old, son ot
Mr. and Mrs George D. Batt, 2S3
Miller street, and Edward Hempel.
14 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Hugo Hempel, 119 Miller street,
were fatally injured in a collision
between an automobile in which
they were riding and one of the
Kulp Transportation company's
trucks at the junction of Military
and Knoche roads shortly after 1
o'clock yesterday morning. The
young men expired while boing
rushed to the DeGraff Memorial
hospital in an ambulance, summoned
by the police.
The automobile in which the
North Tonawanda victims were
riding was owned and driven by
Edward McVey, 27 years old, 29
Belmont street. Bufaflo. It was
a roadster. The owner was the
only other occupant of the ear.
McVey escaped with cuts and
bruises. He was able to go to
headquarters after the accident
and make a report, after which he
went to the Buffalo City hospital
for treatment.
In his report to the town police
McVey said that he was driving
North on Military road and was
approaching the intersection of
Knoche road when he saw the rear
end of ihe Kulp truck, going In the
same direction. He said that he
was almost upon it before seeing
it. He swerved suddenly to the
left, the front end of his oar going
under the body of the truck.
Hempel and Batt, sitting on Mc-
Vey's right side, were hurled from
the car, while McVey, just missing
being struck by the protruding
truck body, hurtled into the street.
Aid Summoned
A passing motorist hurried io
the Tonawanda city police station
for help. Hamp's ambulance was
dispatched to the aid of the injured
and Hempel and Batt rushed to
the hospital. When carried into
the operating room they were pronounced
dead by physicians who
had assembled to attend them.
Hempel's throat was cut and it
was believed that he bled to death
Batt'a skull and chest were crushed.
Ernest G. Vandrel, 142 South
street, Buffalo, driver of the Kulp
truck, said that he stopped and
assisted in placing* Hempel and
Batt in the ambulance.
Batt, Hempel and McVey had
long been chums. McVey came to
North Tonawanda Saturday night
and departed for Buffalo with his
friends about 10 o'clock. He was
bringing them home at the time
of the mishap.

Batt was a graduate of the North
Tonawanda high school and a
member of North Tonawanda
Council, K. of C Besides his parents
he is survived by a brother,
Merton, San Diego, Calif., and two
sisters, the Misses Eleanor and
Marcella Batt, North Tonawanda.
The funeral will be held tomorrow
morning at 8.30 o'clock from the
residence and half an hour later
from the Ascension church. Rev.
John F. Kelley will officiate and
interment will be at Mt. Olivet.
Hempel was employed by his
father in a store conducted in the
City market on Robinson street.
He is survived by his parents, a
brother, Clarence C. Hempel, and
a sister, Mrs. Roy Helf, both of
the Tonawandas. The funeral will
be held tomorrow afternoon at 2
o'clock from the house and half
an hour later from Frieden's
church. Rev. Theodore Mayer will
officiate and interment will be at
Elmlawn.
It was reported that McVey was
arrested yesterday in connection
with the accident. At . the town
police station today the report
was denied. Coroner J. E- Helwig,
who was called ino the case wien
the youths were brought to the
hospital, said that he had not ordered
McVey's arrest. He said it
was possible that an arrest mijrht
be made.
